Spring is here and while our weather may not change too much, our homes can blossom into spring with some easy and fun little updates!
Fresh florals are the easiest and most up-lifting way to “spring-ify” your home. Seeing fresh flowers in the house always brightens my day and while I try to keep them year-round, it is a must for springtime. Flower arranging can sometimes get a little tricky and while I am no trained florist, here are some quick tips for a beautiful arrangement.
- Variety – Choose at least 2-3 types of flowers. I typically select a mix of the 3 for $12 floral bouquets from Publix. My favorite arrangements include a mix of flowers with coordinating colors but I also like mixing multiple colors of the same flower. If you’re not sure what to put together, select some of the pre-mixed bouquets. Costco also has a nice variety of mixed bouquets.
- Check your flowers before leaving the store! I have forgotten this step a few times and been very disappointed to open my bouquet to a few less than thriving blooms. Pull the plastic back and make sure the leaves and flowers are not wilted.
- Prep properly – Make sure to place the flowers in water until you are ready to arrange. Once you are ready, start with removing all of the plastic and rubber bands, mix the flower packet into your vase with cool water about ½ to ⅔ of the way full.
- Cut your flowers – this will help keep them fresh longer. I start by cutting them all the same height, this can be adjusted while arranging. Once they are all cut, I lay them out on the counter to see all of my blooms.
- Arrange – Now, arrange them to look pretty! Start with the sturdier stems and work out, adding from there. Remember, you can cut some stems shorter for the outside flowers or to give varying heights. I do not have any specific “rules” for this but you really can’t go wrong with pretty and simple. Do what you like!
Flower arranging seems too daunting? Pick up an orchid or other living flowers (hopefully, you are better at keeping them alive than me, I rely on my husband for this!)
Here are a few other easy spring touches to consider adding:
- Lavender, lemon and other ‘spring’ scented candles and extracts to help bring the season. Time to get rid of those pine and winter scents and brighten up your home scents.
- Hand towels, I love changing my towels for the seasons and selecting fun new designs. Also, they take up very little storage space in the offseason.
- Pillows and accents – full disclosure here, I do not change my pillows seasonally and have very few seasonal accents. I include this because I really love and admire when people change their pillows and decorations each season. But, the idea of storing all of this in the off times is just more than I am willing to sign up for, so, I keep it to small accent items and usually add some finds from the Target Dollar Spot (my husband just cringed if he read this, but it’s my favorite section and when he makes some of my small decor items disappear, I can pretend not to notice and just find new ones next year!)
